How to say NO: Why is it so difficult and how do you go about it?

4 January 2025

Saying no is a seemingly simple act, but for many it’s a challenge. Yet knowing how to say no is essential to preserving our time, energy and efficiency. So why is it so complicated?

  • The brakes on “no
    • Fear of deceiving others
    • Fear of being seen as “difficult
    • The desire to be appreciated and accepted
    • Fear of missing an opportunity

Saying no means setting limits so you can better manage your priorities. Here are a few tips on how to do it tactfully and respectfully:

  • Take time to think: A hasty “no” can be difficult, so give yourself time to evaluate the request before responding.
  • Be direct and polite: There’s no need to apologize at length. A simple “Thanks for thinking of me, but I’ll have to decline” is often enough.
  • Offer an alternative: If possible, offer an alternative solution. For example, “I can’t participate this time, but I can recommend someone.”
  • Stay true to your priorities: Saying no is easier when you know why you’re doing it. Keep your goals and priorities in mind so you can make decisions in line with them.

The power of NO: Learning to say no means giving yourself the means to say YES to what really matters!
